Blog #6 - CSR IN THE MEDIA – Control what is said ‘13 reasons why’
Netflix as a media
sharing platform has a Corporate Social Responsibility
when in respect to their own actions when making their own content. It Is universally understood that ‘Suicide’ is a negative idea/view that is not
encouraged in fact it is warned against.
Television shows aimed towards adolescence is an area that requires a lot of discretion, to understand
the ‘extent that adolescence will react
with the show’. The text mentions “teens are particularly
sensitive and exposed to quick and powerful changes in perspective to the
world”. They would be quick to form opinions and act on them. It is said a
trait that makes kids better than adults is that they don’t over analyze
things, they would action on it, and so if it does not work out, they lean and don’t
do it again.
When an artist or writer in
this circumstance should consider the extent his/her inquiry should take, they
are not supposed to do too far and to be relevant not stay too safe, this is a really
tricky place to try to be. To be sure, these companies like to look towards
focus groups to analyze their work, in simple terms, they are beta testing
their product before releasing it into the world. The only problem with this is
that Netflix – the company that writes and produces ’13 reasons why’ is only so
patient getting it out on their network.
There are also a lot of flaws
with focus group testing, when someone sees something in complete isolation,
they are likely to not take it too far, they are aware that they are testing something
and they would react in that controlled manner. Adding on to that point, the ‘talk’
is a MAJOR factor when it comes to formulating opinions. Often times it is the
group member talking one to one to one with a phycologist, notes are taken and
that is the end of it.
I read somewhere about the
effect and influence of others behavior and how it may affect others in a
group. Called the bystander affect it is that if one person in a group manages
to convince the majority to believe in their ideas, the effect is that the outlier
who does not really agree, will think of
their own opinions as stupid or worthless, their emotion will transcend their
reasoning, resulting in these negative implications.
